Over het evenement

As the new SCORP-team from EMSA Antwerp, we want to start our ‘Human Rights’ year with a lecture about ‘Unequal roads to health care’.

In this EMSA collaboration with the Medact, People’s Health Movement, Viva Salud and The Right 2 Cure Initiative we will address the problem of unequal access to health care and the different experiences of health in certain minority groups of our society. Different speakers will address multiple aspects of this growing problem. Afterwards, there will be time for discussion and dialogue.

Speakers:

Ben Eder, Climate & Health Campaigner & Aiyan Maharasingam, Campaigns Assistant at Medact will explore our collective understanding of health justice and how at Medact we are organising for a world in which everyone can exercise and achieve their human right to health.

Jasper Thys works as a policy officer at Viva Salud. Viva Salud is a Belgian NGO that fights for the right to health with social movements in Cuba, Palestine, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Philippines. Jasper will present Viva Salud's current campaign All Heroes for Health. He will talk about the repression that social movements and human rights activists are being faced with during the pandemic and explain why we need them if a healthier world is to emerge from this crisis.

Ana Vračar, regional coordinator for PHM Europe, will give a brief introduction to the ongoing "Our Health is Not for Sale!" campaign, organised in cooperation with European network against commercialisation of health and social protection; and PHM global activities aiming to ensure equitable access to health and medicines.

Julie Steendam is the coordinator of the upcoming Right 2 Cure European Citizens' Initiative. This campaign has the ambition to collect 1 million signatures in one year to make the European Commission drop all patent rights on any future COVID-19 related pharmaceuticals or technology.
